You’ve got to admire John Kane’s chutzpah. But not his political judgment.
Kane, the developer of Raleigh’s North Hills, wants $75 million in public money so he can build parking decks for his North Hills East project.
What is he thinking?
It’s not going to happen. Especially not in an election year.
Mayor Meeker immediately blasted Kane’s idea. He drew a line in the political sand. Any City Council member in a contested race who crosses that line will be in serious political trouble.
Of course, Meeker himself could have been vulnerable on this issue. More than 60 percent of voters surveyed two years ago opposed the mayor’s idea of spending $20 million in public money to subsidize a Marriott Hotel downtown.
Voters are just not of a mind to give money to the Marriott family or to people they think of as rich developers.
