Tariffs are controversial – people disagree over whether they do good or harm.  I don’t know who’s right or wrong. But the way Trump saw it Canada was sapping our economy, so after he was reelected he put tariffs on Canada to fix the problem.

An odd thing happened.

Canada ran a TV ad in the World Series with videos of Ronald Reagan in it saying tariffs are a bad idea.

Seeing Reagan disagreeing with him on TV rattled Trump. Angry at Canada he made the tariffs higher.

That raised another question.

He’d already chosen what he believed was the best tariff rate to fix the problem. Then he abandoned the road he’d chosen – because he wanted to punish Canada.

That sounds like a silly mistake – like he raised tariffs because he was angry at Canada for saying something he didn’t like.
