No Defending Trump
It’s striking what Republican politicians didn’t say after Trump was convicted of 34 counts of felony falsification of business records.
They didn’t say, “Trump is an honest businessman. He’d never falsify business records.”
Or, “Trump is a fine family man. He’d never cheat on his wife with a porn star.”
Or, “Trump is an honest politician. He’d never pay hush money to the porn star to get elected President.”
They know nobody would believe that.
Instead, they attacked. They attacked the trial, the judge, the jury, the courts, the court system, the entire government, George Soros and, of course, Joe Biden.
On one hand, they say Biden is so senile and decrepit he can’t govern. Then they say he’s so crafty and devious he plotted the whole prosecution.
Make up your minds.
Mark Robinson faithfully followed the MAGA message. He called it a “sham trial” and said, “The Democrats know they can’t beat President Trump at the polls so they weaponize our government against him.”
And woe be to any Republican who dares question the Dear Leader.
When Larry Hogan, the Republican Senate candidate in Maryland, called for Americans to “respect the verdict and the legal process,” Trump campaign manager Chris LaCivita responded: “You just ended your campaign.”
When the College Republicans National Committee said, “The outcome of this trial should be respected,” LaCivita replied, “Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one.”
Republican politicians are trapped with Trump. They’re terrified of the MAGA mob’s thirst for control and potential for violence.
They have to be Trump’s bootlickers.
You have to hand it to them: They’re good at it.
