The images are depressingly familiar, six years after 9/11:

  • Replays of the terrorist attacks on America

  • Osama bin Laden, now mysteriously dark-bearded, on our TV screens again, threatening and taunting us still

  • An impressively bemedaled and beribboned general warning Congress against a quick withdrawal from Iraq.

Once again, we’re reminded of George Bush’s folly and incompetence: attacking a country that didn’t attack us and letting the real attacker get away.

It was, as Jon Stewart said on The Daily Show, as if America had responded to Pearl Harbor by declaring war on China.

Most depressingly, Bush may get away with it. Congress may be cowed into going along with him – again.

So more American men and women will die in Iraq – some of them on their third or fourth deployments.

Now we have only two hopes:

  • Some Republicans in Congress, like John Warner of Virginia, break ranks and force bigger withdrawals.

  • Or one year from today, on the seventh anniversary of 9/11 and weeks before a presidential election, the American people finally decide they’ve had enough.

Then, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or John Edwards will be swept into office in a landslide.
