Mulling Over Moldova

Was there much mystification among the Moldovan (Moldavian? Moldovar?) muckedy-mucks who mustered last month to meet the American Secretary of State, only to find that instead of Hillary Clinton it was Elaine Marshall?

A cynical, but funny, TAPster took aim at Secretary Marshall’s “laughable idiocy” for her visit to Moldova, where she met with government dignitaries and received an honorary degree from a university.

The TAPster opines:

“Marshall’s absence from the state went unnoticed. Her empire at the Secretary of State’s office doesn’t require much time or oversight, and her team of bureaucrats takes care of the state’s paperwork efficiently as far as we know.  She occasionally has to sign an executive order proffered by Gov. Perdue, but that’s not a lot of work.

“It’s not clear from press reports whether her European vacation was paid for personally or was an official state visit (what a joke) that she billed to taxpayers or used the ‘profits’ generated by her department. In our current economic mess, she owes struggling taxpayers an explanation.

“Perhaps this was a vacation. But, why Moldova? Were all the flights to Belarus booked?

“If taxpayers footed the bill, the Secretary set herself up for an inevitable and well-deserved smack-down for being a tone-deaf, entrenched politician wasting the people’s money on the other side of the world while we are at home collecting loose change from under the couch to pay our teachers.”

The TAPster also notes helpfully that there is a page on the Secretary of State’s website that extols the many benefits our state receives from the “North Carolina – Moldova Partnership for Peace program.”

In these uncertain international times, you can take comfort that our state has solid ties with one of the former Soviet states.
