Screaming Bloody Murder

The Democrat head of the State Board of Education has gotten himself worked up into such a state about the Republican budget and the Republicans ruining public schools he’s one step from either bursting an artery or starting a riot.

To hear him tell it Governor Perdue’s budget will bring light to education and a thousand flowers will bloom in the classrooms from Murphy to Manteo – while the Republican’s budget will spread desolation and ruin and the schools will be reduced to ashes.

The Governor wants to spend $7.57 billion. The Republicans spend less. How much less? A quarter? A third? A half? No. 1.5%.

Even when Democrats factor in the ‘indirect’ cuts they say Republicans are forcing local school boards to make the Republicans still want to spend 97% as much as the Governor.

In all, it adds up to some pretty odd politics.

Back in January Republican Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate Leader Phil Berger set out to cut state government but now they’re bragging about spending 98.5% as much as Perdue spends on education. And Perdue who said the original $600 million in cuts Republicans proposed were a disaster is now saying a mere $200 million in cuts is a worse disaster.

It’s a pretty fair example of how politics works: The Governor screams bloody murder and accuses Republicans of all sorts of vile deeds (that are unpopular with voters) and as their popularity sinks Republicans give in and give her 98.5% of what she wants then, naturally, the Governor steps on the gas, screaming louder to see if she can get that last 1.5%.
