President Obama picked UNC to win the NCAA. More than that, he seems to be picking North Carolina as a key political target.

He asked me how much I thought that was politically motivated. About 80 percent, I’d say.

 

We are the one true Southern state (Florida and Virginia) to go for Obama last year. If he wins North Carolina in 2012, he wins the White House again. Guaranteed.

 

Plus, if a Democrat knocks off Richard Burr next year, Obama could get a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

 

But battleground status can be fleeting. We were a top-10 target for Bill Clinton in 1992. Four years later, we were off the radar.

 

It’s like being national basketball champs. It’s hard to repeat.
