Stein’s Clout

Governor Josh Stein had a good day Tuesday, and there’s good news for him in our statewide poll. (See more about the poll below.)

He gets positive ratings. And voters trust him more than they do the Republican General Assembly.

Stein and former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper are the only two of more than a dozen politicians we tested – including Donald Trump and Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd – who got positive ratings.

We asked (Question 11): “Do you approve or disapprove of the job Josh Stein is doing as Governor?”

46% approve, and 32% disapprove.

That’s plus-14 – excellent in today’s political environment and this 50-50 state.

We also asked (Q12): “Who do you trust more to govern fairly and with the people’s best interests in mind? Democratic Governor Josh Stein or the Republican leadership of the North Carolina legislature?”

By 43-29%, voters said Stein.

Again, plus-14.

Democrats give him a 73% favorable rating, which is why the candidates he endorsed won contested primaries Tuesday.

In this year’s elections, Democrats want Stein standing with them and campaigning for them.

The poll of 1,069 voters was conducted January 31-February 4 by Stephen Clermont with Change Research in Washington. To see all the questions and results, go here. To see the crosstabs – with results by party, race, gender, age, region, etc. – go here. Stephen’s poll overview is here.
