Yow Shoots PR Bricks

Whatever her talents as NCSU’s AD, Debbie Yow’s PR skills are lacking. As an alum, I hope she’s better at hiring than communicating.
I’m a fan, not a fanatic. I like what I see about the new coach. But, once again, I’m stunned by the frenzy Wolfpack fans can work themselves into when everything doesn’t go perfectly. And at how turnover-prone administrators can be when the microphones are on.
Yow made three bonehead plays that would have fit nicely in that perfectly awful NCAA championship game Monday night.
First, she put out an open letter pleading for patience, less than 24 hours before she announced a hire.
What’s worse, the letter went negative on the school’s own program, saying it “is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild.”
Then she stepped on her own announcement by attacking Maryland coach Gary Williams for allegedly trying to “sabotage” State’s search.
When asked whether her feud with Williams meant she was hard to work for, all she needed to do was laugh and say:
“No, I think it means that Gary and I didn’t get along too well. But that’s behind me. I’ve learned a lot and I’m looking forward to working with our new coach.”
Please get her some media training before somebody gets hurt.
