What You Missed

Some of my friends didn’t watch Trump’s inauguration.

One went to church. One went to every Martin Luther King Day celebration she could find. One went to an inaugural-free lunch with friends out of town. One dedicated the day to intensive study of the NFL and college football playoffs.

I watched for them – and maybe you. Here’s what I saw and thought.

Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg stood with the crowd of oligarchs behind Trump. Zuckerberg snuck a peek at Bezos’ wife’s cleavage.

Melanie wore a hat so big Trump couldn’t reach her cheek to kiss her. My wife said she looked like Natasha in Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I didn’t see Rudy or Vivek.

Hillary Clinton laughed when Trump said he’ll rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

George W. Bush made faces like he’d eaten a pot gummy before the ceremony.

It was the whitest crowd in the Capitol since January 6, 2021. But they forgot their Confederate flags this time.

Trump kept his eyes open during the prayers. He didn’t put his hand on the Bible when he took the oath.

Then he gave a 30-minute speech that actually had some soaring, presidential-sounding lines before descending into boasting, bragging and almost self-parody:

“I have been tested and challenged more than any President in our 250-year history.”

Stand aside, Abe and FDR! Get back, JFK!

“An assassin’s bullet ripped through my ear,” but “I was saved by God to make America great again.”

The 2024 election “was the greatest and most consequential in our nation’s history.”

Yes, it’s going to be a long, hard four years.

But after watching it all, I’ll bet that after America goes through it all, Democrats are going to roll to majorities in Congress in two years and to the election and inauguration of a Democratic President in four years.

Maybe that President won’t be afraid to stand outside and let the wind ruffle his or her hair.

And they’ll assemble a crowd of good Americans instead of billionaires, bigots, grifters, traitors and sycophants.
