What Happens If…
Trump’s fighting on a lot of fronts – look at tariffs: If Trump’s right, as he says, he’s leading us into a ‘Golden Age.’ But if he’s wrong we could land in a recession with the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs echoing in our ears.
Here’s another fight: The Constitution says Congress decides how much money gets spent and sets taxes. But Trump’s out to shut down the Department of Education on his own and raise taxes on his own with tariffs – without Congress having a say.
Look at immigration: A judge ordered Trump to pause – not to stop but pause – deporting a plane load of illegal immigrants to El Salvador. Trump ignored the judge. Deported away. The Supreme Court stepped in, told Trump he can’t just deport whoever he wants – a deportee has a right to challenge his decision in court. So is Trump going to ignore the Supreme Court too?
The Constitution gives us co-equal branches of government: The President, Congress, the Courts. Each exists to limit the other’s power. That way no one gets his hands on too much power. That’s a bedrock beneath the feet of our democracy.
But what matters to Trump? Being boss.
But throwing the Separation of Powers Doctrine out the window to be boss is risky – that one comes with a price of its own.
