Washed Up
A TAPster who has too much time on his hands and no love lost for my beloved OBX offers the rant. I post it here because I am, after all, fair and balanced.
Highway 12 on the Outer Banks collapsed again last week. There was no hurricane, nor a storm of any kind. The moon was full, the waves were high, and there she went. Again.
The NCDOT is rushing to the rescue and, in essence, filling the hole in that road with the equivalent of hundreds of school teachers, state employees and tax reductions.
Here’s a better idea: sell Currituck and Dare counties to Virginia.
This is a win-win for the GOP. Proceeds from the sale of these two remote, waterlogged and chigger-infested counties filled with Yankee tourists could be used to actually reduce taxes for the wealthy in North Carolina, not the silly tax rate shell game the GOP is playing right now.
Why hasn’t the GOP thought of this already? These counties seem closer to the capital of England than the capital of North Carolina. Heck, a nice sale would save GOP leaders the embarrassment of acknowledging they’ve never been there, couldn’t find it if they had to, don’t know the difference between Jockeys Ridge and jock itch, and think Duck is something you shoot from a blind.
And, not to worry about our pride for the Wright Brothers. The GOP will declare that we will always be the First in Flight state, even though the Wrights’ historic and beloved sand dune would become a part of another state.
This is a natural for the GOP, who prove regularly that they are being open-minded (translation: unburdened with history, tradition or good sense). Heck, the savings alone from rescuing floundering OBXers from a single hurricane would build a handful of elementary schools somewhere in what’s left of North Carolina. Or better yet for the GOP, reduce taxes to the wealthy by another couple of percentage points.
As a part-time OBX resident, I could resent the TAPster’s ill-mannered screed. But, then again, Virginia does have a Democratic Governor….
