Veto Calculus

Governor Perdue won her first veto fight. And Raleigh ’s political chemistry is in flux.
Despite their majorities, Republicans now face a Governor who looks stronger than she did a week ago. And then there is the swing power of a handful of conservative Democratic legislators.
For Perdue’s part, she has to be careful not to overuse the veto.
Her very success on the health-care bill will pose a problem for her. Every group unhappy with anything the Republican legislature does – teachers, labor, environmentalists, trial lawyers, African-Americans – will now pressure her to pull out the veto stamp again.
But she can’t afford to look like an obstructionist, the cause of gridlock in Raleigh .
And how often can she count on those swing Democrats to back her? If she loses them once, they may get used to bolting.
