Trump’s character counts

Elections are usually about issues. But sometimes character overwhelms issues. Like with Trump.

The Gallup Poll asked: “Thinking about Donald Trump as a person, do you have a positive or negative opinion of him?”

Only 36 percent of voters – just over one in three – said positive; 55 percent said negative. Among Independents, only 31 percent said positive and 55 percent, negative. (Partisans, of course, are wildly split: Democrats are 88-7 negative, and Republicans are 73-20 positive.)

The 36 percent is 9 points less than Trump’s job-approval rating of 45 percent. His job-approval has ticked up as Republicans have lined up with him. But even 20 percent of Republicans have a negative opinion of him as a person. He’s right on their issues, but his tweets, his personal feuds and his rally rants give them pause.

The bottom line is that the American people just don’t like Trump. That should be a powerful boost for Democrats this year. The danger is that Trump Derangement Syndrome, understandable as it is, will drive Democrats to be even more hateful than Trump.

Leave that to him. Leave him to the Republicans. And leave it up to the voters.
