Tomato Sandwich Wars

I started a Twitter war over tomato sandwiches, and I got my all-time record reaction.

Last I looked, I had over 32,000 views, plus lots of likes, dislikes, retweets and comments pro and con.

It started when a Republican legislator tweeted that Wednesday would be “Tomato Sandwich Day” at the General Assembly.

I responded, “Much as I love tomato sandwiches, I wouldn’t eat one with these people.”

That touched off a back and forth that’s still going on.

After serving the tomato sandwiches, Republican legislators served up a platter full of veto overrides.

They force-fed North Carolina an unhealthy heap of bad laws that Governor Roy Cooper had vetoed.

One erodes our voting rights.

Two loosen regulations on charter schools, while public schools still don’t have a budget.

One stokes culture wars in the schools.

Another gives legislators more power and more political patronage appointments.

One bans supportive health care for transgender kids.

But they did nothing on Medicaid expansion.

Much as I love tomato sandwiches, that would have ruined my appetite.
