Tillis vs Trump
Senator Thom Tillis stood up to MAGA Mark Robinson. Now he should stand up to Donald Trump.
Tillis, North Carolina’s senior Senator, endorsed Bill Graham over Robinson in the Republican primary for governor.
Robinson promptly labeled Tillis one of the “RINO elites” plotting “to take me down.”
Previously, Robinson blasted as “cowards” unnamed Republicans “who have watched as my back has been whipped by our enemies.”
“I don’t have to worry about it,” Robinson said then. “Because one day, Jesus Christ is going to ride back to this earth on that white horse. When he does, he’s going to bring his vengeance.”
A friend who goes to church much more than I do said, “Robinson is wrong. Jesus is not going to bring vengeance, he’s going to bring judgment. There’s a difference.”
Tillis isn’t my cup of tea, but he’s not serving up MAGA’s poisoned chalice.
He strikes me as a responsible Republican conservative. He has worked with Democrats in the Senate on same-sex marriage, gun control and immigration.
He voted for President Biden’s infrastructure bill. Unlike his hypocritical GOP colleagues, he has a right to boast about projects like the $1 billion Raleigh-to-Richmond rail link.
Now, he should take the next step: Oppose Trump’s nomination for President.
Robert Kagan of The Washington Post has written, wisely and eloquently, about the “grim picture of the prospects for dictatorship in the United States” if Trump is elected President again.
Kagan offers a solution:
“Imagine that Republicans who know Trump poses a threat of dictatorship suddenly discovered their courage and began speaking out, and not just one or two but dozens of them — current and former elected officials, former high-ranking officials from the Trump and past Republican administrations. Imagine if the wing of the Republican Party that still believes in defending the Constitution identified itself that way, as ‘Constitutional Republicans’ implacably opposed to the man who blatantly attempted to subvert the Constitution and has indicated his willingness to do so again as president.”
Imagine that Senator Tillis had that courage.
Yes, he would bring down the vengeance of Trump-Robinson-MAGA Republicans.
But he would bring lasting honor to his name and legacy. He might assure himself of winning reelection in 2026 – and as long as he wants.
And he might save our democracy.
History is knocking, Senator Tillis. Answer the door.
