Tillis’ Tap Dance
Do I have to start liking Thom Tillis now?
The second-term U.S. Senator from North Carolina got censured by the state Republican convention for working with Democrats on guns, immigration and gay marriage.
The resolution cited “blatant violations of our party platform.”
The NC GOP doesn’t tolerate deviations from the party line. Then-Senator Richard Burr was censured two years ago for finding Trump guilty in the January 6 impeachment trial.
But Burr was on the way out, while Tillis is an ambitious man. He is canny and cunning; he went from freshman state representative to N.C. House Speaker in four years, then was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014.
Maybe he’s figured out something other Republicans haven’t.
One Republican said of the censure, “This sends a terrible message to independents that the NCGOP is no longer a big tent party … and if it continues, North Carolina will become a blue state.”
As Hamlet said, “‘Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.”
