The Rest of Raleigih
Raleigh’s North, Northeast and Northwest planning districts accounted for 58% of the city’s growth over the last six years. Compare that to the Central District (downtown): its share was 2.5%.
The Mayor’s spokesman, City Manager Russell Allen, says North Raleigh hasn’t been forgotten when it comes to city spending – and adds, as an example, that the City has brought hundreds of acres of greenway along the Neuse River. But he forgot one thing: The city hasn’t turned the land into parks.
Of course, parks aren’t the biggest problem. Traffic is. Growth means more cars which means traffic jams. Mayor Meeker’s been spending millions downtown – but now it turns out the growth is elsewhere. Let’s hope now that the Mayor has traffic running up and down Fayetteville Street again, he and the City Manager will pay a bit more attention to the traffic in the rest of Raleigh.
