The Dark Side

Economic numbers are brightening a bit, so President Obama’s ratings are a bit brighter. But the most striking thing about the election climate nine months out is the darkness on the Republican side.

Listen to them – and to what their words and their expressions say about their mood, their attitude and their vision of the future. You’re struck by one thing: It’s dark in there.

Listen to their presidential candidates; apparently, the country is about to collapse – economically, socially and morally. Listen to their debates or watch Fox News; you’d think we’re going to end up like a scene from the Mad Max movies. Right here in Wake County, according to Paul Coble & Co., we’re under attack from the United Nations.

That plays well, of course, with the Obama-haters. But are they so blinded by hate they’re transferring their bitterness to the country?

Republicans remind me of us Democrats in the 1980s. Our politicians outdid themselves talking about how bad things were in America – and how they were going to get ever worse. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan smiled, chuckled and said he knew things would get better.

Voters like optimism – and optimistic leaders.

You can make fun of hope of change, but hope and change beat gloom and doom every time.
