School Bond Fight
Opponents of the school bond have run the first ad. Instead of supporting the billion dollar bond the Chairman of the County Commissioners, Tony Gurley, and Mayor Charles Meeker support, they endorse a smaller $650 million bond, which would not require a tax increase. They also support using the county’s hotel/motel tax to help schools. Right now, the tax is being used to pay for things like Mayor Meeker’s Convention Center and the hockey arena. The bonds’ supporters want the county to use the money for education.
My guess is the sponsors of the ads – Americans for Prosperity – have raised an excellent issue. Voters will prefer using the hotel tax to pay for schools over paying higher property taxes.
