Republicans: storming the castle
Just like the Democrats, New Hampshire Republicans armed with torches and pitchforks stormed the Establishment castle.
Now the GOP Establishment has to decide whether to unite behind Jeb Bush, John Kasich or Marco Rubio – or cut a deal with The Art of the Deal himself, Donald Trump. Anything to stop Ted Cruz.
The party fat cats could rationalize that, if all the Establishment candidates’ votes had been combined, that candidate would have won. Yes, and if I had wings, I could fly.
The bottom line is that Trump won, Trump is in the lead and Cruz is lurking.
You have to admire Trump. You have to admire a candidate who breaks all the rules of conventional campaigns. No real fund-raising. No wearing yourself out going to every to every coffee shop and living room.
Trump just tweets away on his phone. He calls into news shows or drops by a nearby studio in Manhattan. He hops onto his jet to perform at a rally and then flies back to sleep in his own bed.
He won the same way Bernie Sanders won. By having a clear message (“Make America Great Again”) that grabs people who are angry and anxious about the direction of America.
Remember six months ago when all the experts knew that Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton would waltz to their respective nominations?
As always in elections, the voters get the last word. The question is whether the experts and the party Establishments got the word.
