Power Shifts

We’re witnessing the biggest shift in political power in America in a generation: from the state capitals to Washington.

The much-heralded “New Federalism” of the 70s, 80s and 90s is dead. The era of ex-Governors in the White House (Carter, Reagan and Clinton) is past. Today, all power flows to the Potomac.

Witness:

  • After taking her oath, joining the Inaugural parade and signing a few executive orders, what was Governor Perdue’s first order of business? Flying to Washington to ask for money.
  • State legislators talk only about what to cut and how to save. All discussion about what and where to spend link directly to the stimulus bill in Washington.
  • We even have the extraordinary spectacle of the federal government now deciding how much money corporate executives can be paid.

The old Watergate adage was “follow the money.” That’s where the power is today.
