Politics as Usual

The other morning on one page of the newspaper Governor Perdue (or rather the Perdue administration), pleading hard times, announced the Department of Health and Human Services will no longer pay for eye exams, and eyeglasses and dental care to Medicaid patients. On top of that times are so hard the department’s also limiting physical therapy and speech therapy for the elderly and disabled. It’s to argue with austerity in this day and age but… on the opposite page of the newspaper that morning the Perdue administration was announcing the hiring of a new aide for DHHS Secretary Lanier Cansler – for $175,000.
It seems in an austerity measure of their own, last June, Republican Legislators eliminated the Health and Wellness Fund – leaving the Funds Director (who earned $175,000 a year) without a job. But not for long. The News and Observer reports the erstwhile director promptly “landed a new job” earning the same money working for Cansler – who promptly announced his having a new aide would save millions…though how isn’t exactly clear.
