President Bush was already giving whoever has the distinction of being the most unpopular president in history a run for his money. Now, as if the war in Iraq isn’t a big enough challenge, he’s leading the campaign to legalize 12 million illegal immigrants, which polls show 70% of Americans oppose. More to the point, virtually every one of the thirty-three percent of the people – which the polls say continue to support President Bush – don’t just oppose his plan, they loathe it.

And Bush is pouring fuel on the fire by attacking conservative Republican lawmakers who disagree with him (News and Observer, 06-02-07). If you were a Republican Senator or Congressman would you mind being attacked by the President on an issue 70% of the people – and almost every Republican – agree with you on?

President Bush’s attacks may boomerang and, instead of passing his immigration bill, he may succeed in undercutting his last base of support.
