People, not politics

To paraphrase JFK, defeat is an orphan and victory has a thousand theorists. A thousand theories bloomed after Conor Lamb won in Pennsylvania last week.

Democrats say, “There’s a 20-point anti-Trump wave. Just think of all the places we’ll win!” Or, “Lamb won because he ran away from Nancy Pelosi.” Or, “he won because he ran as a pro-gun, pro-God moderate.” Or, “he won because he supported Obamacare.”

Republicans like Paul Ryan rationalize: “Our candidate was lousy. Trump made it close.”

As always, politicians think it’s all about them. It’s not. It’s about the voters. Democrats need to stay focused on people, not politics. On policy, not Trump, his tweets or Pelosi.

Voters care about their own lives, not our politics. We junkies get excited about Russia, Cambridge Analytica, McCabe, Tillerson, etc. Voters care more about jobs, education, health care, cost of living/income inequality, crime, immigration and drugs/opioids. Real-life stuff, not political stuff.

Conor Lamb won because he was a great candidate with a great bio. And he talked about what voters care about.

Stop setting your hair on fire every time Trump lies or tweets (which are one and the same). The Trump Titanic is steaming full speed toward the Mueller iceberg. There’s plenty of time for that.

For now, listen to the best advice I’ve heard: “Voters are looking for candidates who will promote issues that affect voters rather than simply making political arguments about Trump, Pelosi, and the like. Always have been; always will be.”
