Our Better Angels
“If we’re ever going to find our better angels again, it has to start with us setting the example of how to disagree better.”
– Utah Governor Spencer Cox
Republicans and Democrats now live in separate worlds; each watches their own cable news network; they quarrel, bicker, every day in Congress; political wars are meaner on social media. Arrogance erupts, humility flies out the window.
In another bleak time, sowing seeds of hope, Abraham Lincoln said: “The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely as they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
Those mystic chords are still there. Our better angels are still there. Bow your head – pray they touch.
