Mitt Broccoli

Mitt Romney is like political broccoli: Republicans may have to swallow him, but they still don’t like the taste.

On CNN last night, James Carville cut through all the clutter and chatter with this dead-on analysis of what Iowa means:

– Romney will be the Republican presidential nominee.

– A lot of Republicans won’t be happy about it.

But the White House may be very happy. The worst sides of the Republican Party will be on display for at least a few more weeks – namely Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich. Those three, Gingrich especially, hate Romney and will do all they can to destroy him.

In the end, Romney may emerge as the John Kerry of 2012 – grudgingly embraced by an unhappy party. By then, all his negatives will have been aired, but not by anyone with the money and killer instinct he’ll face in the fall.

Team Obama should attack Romney the way Team Bush attacked Kerry in 2008: go right at his strength. With Kerry, it was his military service. With Romney, it’s his business experience. Make that a negative, and you destroy him.

This morning, things look good for Obama in November. All thanks to some 125,000 Iowans – about enough to elect a mayor of Raleigh, as Bob Geary of the Independent Weekly tweeted last night.
