Mirrors
Are Trump and Biden a pair of giants shaping what Americans see, think, believe?
Or are Trump and Biden simply mirrors, reflections of what Americans believe?
Not long ago if a politician got caught telling a lie he went down in flames. Lies were taboo. Did Trump convince people lies don’t matter? Or is Trump simply a reflection of the fact that Americans don’t care about lies anymore?
Running for office a politician thinks, What I’m doing is winning this election. He believes he has the power in his hands. But he’s really like a frog on a log floating down a river watching the banks roll by telling himself, I’ve really got this log moving – but it’s not him, it’s the river.
Neither Trump nor Biden is a giant. Neither changed America. America changed and that gave us Trump and Biden.
What caused that change? Old-fashioned vices like pride, vanity, greed, envy, anger – we watched churches descend from Christian to post-Christian, Washington descend into a swamp of corruption, the media lusting after making money – and ended up stuck with Trump and Biden.
It’s an old story: Sure they have power in their hands proud men see no need for a merciful God. Trump saying, I am your retribution is enough – people cheer.
So how does this story end? That’s an old tale too. It ends with a Waterloo, followed by a reckoning.
