Michele and Newt

At the Iowa debate, without blushing, Tim Pawlenty described himself an ‘Effective, Tested, Conservative Leader’ – two days later he was out of the Presidential race. So much for the power of slogans. This election folks are asking, Where’s the beef?
On the other hand, Newt Gingrich breathed a real spark into his flagging campaign by blistering reporters for asking ‘gotcha questions’ and playing ‘Mickey Mouse Games.’ These days folks are angry enough to appreciate a bit of old-fashioned orneriness.
Mitt Romney pitched (and toed) the party line, playing the staid frontrunner, not bringing anyone out of their seats cheering but not doing himself any harm either.
Michele Bachmann had the strongest message but Mrs. Bachmann has a peculiar problem all her own – she’s haunted by the shadow of Sarah Palin. You look at her and listen to her and she makes sense and at the debate she proved she can catch a hand grenade and toss it right back (say, to Chris Wallace) but as you watch her you just naturally wonder, Is she going to turn out to be Sarah Palin?
It would help if she looked like Margaret Thatcher.
