Mandy Cohen, Covid and Masks

MAGA Republicans apparently like masks only when they’re worn by Proud Boys attacking the U.S. Capitol.

North Carolina’s junior U.S. senator, “Popgun Ted” Budd, and 8th District Congressman, “Bathroom Dan” Bishop, last week claimed that, when Dr. Mandy Cohen was the state’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, she “spread misinformation about … Covid vaccinations and the necessity of masks.”

Cohen is now President Biden’s pick to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

(About the nicknames: Budd is a gun devotee who owns a gun store and shooting range in Rural Hall in Forsyth County. He wore a pistol on his hip in his primary-campaign ads last year. Bishop, as a state senator, authored the infamous 2016 “bathroom bill” that Republicans later were forced to flush. He may run for state attorney general in 2024.)

A couple of weeks ago, state Treasurer Dale Folwell took a potshot at Cohen over Covid – pandering to MAGA Republicans in a desperate effort to breathe life into his hapless campaign for governor.

I wrote then that Governor Roy Cooper and Secretary Cohen saved lives during the Covid pandemic, while Republicans like Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis put lives at risk.

A reader found this telling fact: Florida’s population is roughly twice North Carolina’s, but had triple the Covid deaths we had.

Florida’s population is 21.7 million; ours is 10.5 million. As of May 29, Florida reported 88,505 Covid deaths and North Carolina, 29,059.

Cohen did a good job. President Biden has made a good appointment.

Republicans not only put lives at risk, they put politics before people’s lives and health.
