Mandate?
Trump boasts that his election – by 1.5% in the popular vote – gives him a “mandate.”
Which reminds me of what Jim Hunt said after one of his four elections as governor.
(I forget which one, but I do remember that his margins of victory ranged from 9.5 to 31%.)
A reporter asked Hunt, “Do you consider this a mandate?”
“No,” Hunt replied, “I consider it an opportunity.”
Of course, saying that requires humility – something Trump doesn’t have.
When you have humility, you know that an election isn’t about YOU. It’s about the people you serve. You listen to people, and you treat them with respect.
Trump can’t do that.
That’s why this term, like his last, likely will be a failure.
