“MAGA Fascists” vs Democracy
Adrian Fontes doesn’t mince words. He calls election-deniers “MAGA fascists.”
Fontes, Arizona’s newly elected secretary of state, was the keynote speaker at the state Democratic Party’s Unity Dinner Saturday night.
The big, burly ex-Marine with a booming voice and commanding presence delivered the most powerful and inspiring speech I’ve heard since Barack Obama in 2008.
He said the only way to beat MAGA candidates is “go right at them. Attack them directly. Call them liars, extremists and fascists.”
Yes, fascists.
“If you don’t like being called a fascist, stop acting like a fascist,” he said.
In Arizona, unlike North Carolina, the secretary of state oversees elections. Fontes’ opponent last year was an election-denier, an Oath Keeper who was at the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Fontes went right at him and won, 52.4%-47.6%.
In 2020, Arizona was the front line for election-denier attacks. Fontes was at the point of the spear; he was Maricopa County recorder, overseeing 2.5 million voters – the biggest election jurisdiction in the country.
Arizona and North Carolina are both closely divided swing states. Arizona flipped the election to Joe Biden in 2020, and we will be a vital battleground next year.
Keep an eye on Fontes. And pay attention to what he says.
