I love October now
I hated October when I worked in campaigns. It was the worst month.
You were already dead tired when October got here. Then things got worse. Busier, crazier and more stressful.
Ask anybody in a campaign how they’re doing in October, and they all say: “I’ll just be glad when it’s over.”
You count down the final days. Life is measured by “four weeks out…22 days out…two weeks out…10 days out.”
Everything has to be done NOW. Nerves are frazzled. Brains are fried. You can’t sleep. You eat junk. Your whole system is zapped.
The weather turns cold. It gets dark. It’s dark when you go in to the headquarters and dark when you finally go home.
There are always October surprises. In 2016, for Democrats, it was the Wikileaks email leaks and the FBI bombshell. This year it’s Kavanaugh and the immigration caravan. For Republicans, it was Trump’s “grab ‘em…” tape in 2016 and, this year, anytime Trump opens his mouth.
But no more. Now I love October.
The weather is beautiful. It goes from hot, but not too hot, to cool, but not too cold yet. The air is crisp, the sky is blue. The beach is uncrowded, you can find a seat at your favorite seafood place, and the ocean is still warm enough for swimming.
It’s the second-best month of the year, after April, which sits on the opposite side of our trip around the sun.
The only downsides are all those yard signs, TV ads and pesky politicians.
Ahh, October. Ahhctober! I never knew ye.
