Lie Low and Wait for the Storm to Pass
July 7, 2011 - by
A state trooper from Wilmington stopped Gina Tessener from Raleigh because her headlight was out, then smelled liquor on her breath and asked her to take a ‘walk the line’ sobriety test.
Mrs. Tessener told him no – so the patrolman put the willowy blonde mother of three in handcuffs and drove her to the Wrightsville Police Station to take a breathalyzer test. Her husband arrived and she took the test and blew a 0.00 twice.
But instead of letting Mrs. Tessener go, the patrolman put her back in handcuffs and drove her to the New Hanover County Jail in Castle Hayne for a hearing before a Magistrate who let her go.
When Mrs. Tessener’s husband wrote the Governor and just about every politician in sight the Governor promptly announced she had suspended the Troopers involved and ordered an investigation.
Then the local State Senator announced he didn’t believe the Tessener’s story and announced, “It’s time someone spoke up and defended our troopers.”
Mrs. Tessener was arrested three weeks ago. But the Highway Patrol hasn’t completed its investigation. Could it be an example of the old political adage for surviving a scandal: ‘Lie low until the storm passes’?
