In praise of budget slowness

Democrats are surely and sorely tempted to blast Republican legislators for dallying and delaying the budget. Not so fast, my friends. Here, slow is good.

Especially after Senate Capo Tom Apodaca blasted the House for (horrors!) not even meeting with the Senate on the budget. He complained that the House is spending too much time talking about what’s in the Senate budget.

That’s a good thing when you consider what’s in the Senate budget. And what’s hidden in the Senate budget.

Every day, there’s another story about “a little-noticed provision of the Senate budget” that just got noticed. Every hearing the House holds, the more horrors come to light. Every time, you see why the Senate hid it.

Now, Democrats aren’t without sin here. They often stuck “special provisions” into budgets.

But, as with most things, the Republicans have taken things to the extreme. After promising they would never, ever do such a thing if they were in charge. Then they realized how much bad law they could pass when members were reluctant to vote against the budget and the Governor, despite his bluster, unlikely to veto it.

So let’s keep this process in low, slow gear. Let’s take a good look at what they don’t want us to see.
