I Was Wrong

Being a stubborn old man myself, I didn’t want President Biden to quit.

I was wrong.

I feared the Democratic Party would descend into civil war.

I was wrong.

I feared Vice President Kamala Harris wouldn’t be a strong candidate.

I was wrong.

I’ve never been so glad to be so wrong.

I’ve never seen momentum change so fast in politics.

The only thing close was 1992, when Bill Clinton’s struggling campaign caught fire in the summer. He reintroduced himself at the convention as coming “from a place called Hope” (in Arkansas). He picked Al Gore as his running mate, they and their wives rolled off on a campaign bus and rolled right over President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot in November.

Harris has that kind of steamroller momentum now.

I’m glad.

I’m glad I don’t have to watch and worry any more as President Biden speaks.

I’m glad to see all the energized people for Harris: Black women, all women, Latinos, young people, Never-Trump Republicans and us White Dudes.

I’m glad for Anderson Clayton, the state Democratic chair.

Two weeks ago, she had the hardest job in politics: getting young people excited about an old man.

Now she’s riding a wave of energy, excitement and enthusiasm.

She’s back where she started in politics in 2020: campaigning for Kamala Harris for President (photo).

I know what’s coming from Trump, Vance and MAGA Republicans.

They’ll double down on hate, bigotry, vitriol and fear.

But Americans may be turning a page – away from a dark, dystopian past and toward a bright, hopeful future.

We’re not going back. We’re moving forward.
