Go Heels

I’m an N.C. State grad and a rabid Wolfpack fan. But I’m pulling for UNC this year.

The last time I did this was in 1956-57, when I was a young fan of Frank McGuire’s undefeated national championship team. I got over that quickly. I spent many years enjoying hating Dean Smith and all his teams.

But now I’ve changed. Why?

Because Roy Williams carried North Carolina for Barack Obama.

During the campaign, Williams permitted a high-profile, much-covered photo op in which Obama scrimmaged with the Heels.

Close as North Carolina was in November, there is no question that one event put Obama over.

Afterward, someone – probably a jealous Wake Forest fan – complained that the scrimmage violated NCAA rules. When questioned, ol’ Roy said simply: I wanted my team to have the chance to play with a future President.

So when my bleeding-Red friends ask why I’m pulling for that frickin’ Roy and his freakin’ team, there’s my answer.
