The Anthony Weiner scandal exposes (so to speak) the deadly mixture of three narcissistic pursuits: politics, social media and the gym.
Weiner, by all appearances (so to speak), is a classic political geek: the president of the debate club who wasn’t exactly Cool in School. But in politics, he’s cool. Once he gets to Congress, he finds himself suddenly attractive to the opposite sex.
Then he finds the Congressional gym. Suddenly, he has pecs, abs and biceps! What a studly piece of work he sees in the mirror.
Then – uh-oh – he discovers Facebook and Twitter. A young staffer teaches him how to download photos. He can’t resist taking a picture of his buff new bod in a towel. Then sending it to some apparently desirable and desiring female in cyberspace, so she can truly appreciate his greatness – and maybe have a chance to meet the great man himself.
The rest is history – and fodder for cable and late-night comedy.
