Enough Already

A lot of people of my political stripe believe the N&O went overboard in its coverage of Jesse Helms’ death.

One called it “hypocritical.” Another said the N&O is “atoning” for its coverage of Helms – which is nothing to atone for.

Another said the paper is taking the “easy” way out.

Most agree the coverage went on far too long. And it does not befit the heritage of a newspaper that had the courage to stand up to Helms’ racism and negativism.

One critic expressed the hope that, once this wave passes, Helms will pass into the place of dishonor he deserves in history.

As another put it: “The one thing they can’t say about him is: ‘He brought out the best in us’.”
