Edwards Supports Gay Marriage?
Well, not John.
Mrs. Edwards made a pilgrimage to San Francisco to help kick off the annual gay pride parade which The News and Observer (6-25-07) described as ‘a campy civil rights celebration… attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators sprinkled with drag queens, leather chaps and a healthy dose of nudity.’ Mrs. Edwards promptly endorsed gay marriage.
“I don’t know why someone else’s marriage has anything to do with me,” She said. “I’m completely comfortable with gay marriage.”
Unlike, say, her husband John.
“John has been pretty clear about it, that he is very conflicted,” Mrs. Edwards explained. “He has a deeply held belief against any form of discrimination, but that’s up against his being raised in the 1950’s in a rural southern town.”
In other words, John Edwards is still struggling with his bigoted southern roots. Which, I guess, means he deserves the more enlightened Californians compassion – and maybe even their votes.
Pardon me, but could there be a little politics at work here in this little family spat?
No serious presidential candidate from either party – not Barack Obama, not Hillary Clinton – has publicly supported gay marriage.
But John Edwards may have found a way around that. Partly. Could he be sending a message to gays? Look, none of us – me, Barack or Hillary – dare say we’re for gay marriage. But at least with me you know you’ll have a spouse in the White House who’s on your side. That puts him one up on both Obama and Hillary.
