Deborah Ross’ Rx

Curmudgeonly Cajun James Carville says Democrats just need to “roll over and play dead” and wait for Trump’s inevitable collapse in the polls.

Curmudgeonly Senator Bernie Sanders vehemently disagrees: “Democrats have been playing dead for too many years.” He’s waging war on “the oligarchy.”

Curmudgeonly me thinks Rep. Deborah Ross of Raleigh has a better way: “I’m focused on how people in my district are affected, such as education, scientific research, health care and the weather service.”

I talked to her this week as she drove back to Washington for more congressional fun and games, like Trump’s speech and a looming federal government shutdown.

Last Friday, while Trump and Vance were ambushing Ukraine President Zelensky in the Oval Office, Ross convened a panel in Raleigh on how Republican budget-slashing could hurt Medicaid.

Ross called Medicaid cuts “penny wise and pound foolish,” because they’ll “put families in medical debt” to cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans. That will put more strain on the health care system, create more crowding in emergency rooms and force some rural hospitals in North Carolina to close.

Ross told the panel, “The money will then go to people who are not investing in the health care system, will take health care away from people who need health care, and create a health care crisis that will cost our communities even more money. It is the worst way to deal with public policy.”

She has other concerns for her district. Just as an owl was found with bird flu in Cary, Musk’s chainsaw chopped off a top bird-flu expert who went to hot spots. Federal Aviation Administration cuts could make flying out of RDU riskier.

What should people do?

“Go to congressional town halls,” she said, both Democrats’ and Republicans’.

Well, maybe not Republicans’.

Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, just told Republican lawmakers in a closed-door meeting “to stop holding in-person town halls amid a wave of angry backlash over the cuts undertaken by President Donald Trump’s administration.”

Ross also suggested, “Share news on social media.”

That’s where most people get news today.

You can see more about what she’s doing and get updates here.

And if you like Ross’ approach, you can help her raise money to flip the House to Democratic control in 2026. Click here.

That’ll stop the Trump train, rein in Musk and restore checks and balances to an unbalanced Washington.
