Cool the Hot Takes

Nothing could have inflamed America more than releasing the Mueller report “summary” during the NCAA’s Round of 32. In the middle of the Carolina game!

You half expected Ernie Johnson, Clark Kellogg, Kenny the Jet Smith and Charles Barkley to spend halftime analyzing the fine points of collusion and obstruction of justice.

Trump and the Trumpsters immediately trumpeted victory, vindication and total exoneration.

Not true.

Democrats were appalled, apoplectic or at a loss. They should take a deep breath. Cool the hot takes. Look at the big picture.

First, we haven’t seen the Mueller report yet. We will. Nothing stays secret today.

And, if there wasn’t collusion, why was there a cover-up? There’s been perjury, witness tampering and maybe obstruction of justice by Trump himself.

And, if there wasn’t collusion and a conspiracy with a foreign country to win the 2016 election, isn’t that a pretty low bar for a President to meet? Suppose Mueller had found collusion. Can you imagine the crisis America would be in today? That would clearly be a high crime, and we’d be headed for a long, bitter impeachment battle. Spare us.

And, even if there wasn’t collusion, there appears to be a lot of corruption – in Trump’s family, his business, the inaugural committee and his foundation. Those investigations go on.

And, even if there wasn’t collusion, there’s Trump’s continuing flood of insult and invective, cruelty and calumny (see: John McCain), disregard for democracy, disrespect for decency and thinly veiled hints to his more thuggish supporters that they take matters into their own hands.

And, what about their emails? What about Jared’s WhatsApp?

After all this, maybe we have time to talk about how Trump’s (and the Republicans’) policies actually affect Americans: Big tax cuts for the super-wealthy and big corporations and, for everybody else, big cuts in Social Security, Medicare, health care, education, libraries and the arts. Denial of climate change. Deregulation of offshore drilling, chemicals in the water and airline safety. Stripping real defense needs to build an inefficient and ineffective border wall. Insulting America’s allies and embracing enemies like Putin and Kim. Piling up mountains of government debt.

Must we go on?

Americans have pretty much made up their minds about Trump. Most don’t want to him to be President for four more years. They want to see who the Democrats have to offer.

Get on with it.
