This morning in the newspaper John McCain ripped into Barack Obama, saying Obama supported “legislation ensuring ‘comprehensive sex education’ for kindergartners.”

Sounds like Obama passed a bill to give kindergartners a manual on how to have safe sex, but, in fact, the kind of sex education Obama was proposing – in that bill – was making kindergartners aware of sexual predators.

This is a bitter pill to swallow.

Naturally, I’m tougher on Republicans than Democrats when it comes to being truthful in campaigns. I’ve known for years Democrats will stoop to any level. But not Republicans. We’re above that.

So, suddenly, it comes as a shock I’m asking myself, How can I vote for a man who says his opponent wants kindergartners to have sex?

That leaves me between a rock and a hard place.

Because, the moment I entertain a whisper of voting for Barack Obama, I immediately think, I can’t do that – he’s for gay rights.

Well, Obama, himself, let me off the hook. He put out a statement answering McCain and let rip, saying, “Last week, John McCain told Time Magazine he couldn’t define what honor was. Now we know why.”

Now, one thing’s for sure: Any man who turned down being let out of a P.O.W. camp early – because the other prisoners had been there longer than he had – understands honor. McCain didn’t tell Time Magazine he couldn’t define honor. He told them he’d written five books about it – and if they wanted an answer to read them.

So Obama let me off the hook. Because, now, they’ve both lied. So it balances out.

Still, this is one helluva mess.

But it’s clarified one thing.

For a while I’ve been wondering if there’s more lying going on in politics today. I’ve been thinking there was but I’ve also been asking myself if, when I was younger, I just missed all the sleight of hand. Well, I’m now absolutely certain. There is more lying going on today. Nothing like this went on, say, when Ronald Reagan ran against Jimmy Carter.
