Burn the Heretics!

After all these years, I find out that Carter Wrenn is a liberal.
He had me fooled â working for Jesse Helms, where he ran ads calling Jim Hunt a âMondale liberal.â Even after we became friends and worked together on some non-political projects, he maintained the façade of a crusty conservative.
Now Paul Coble claims he has unearthed a secret cabal of liberals â like Carter and Joe Knott â behind the George Holding campaign.
Coble is also in high dudgeon over a super-PAC supporting Holding. (Donât you just love that Republicans like Coble, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are the first victims of super-PACs? There is karma in politics.)
Todayâs Republicans remind me more and more of Joe McCarthy â or maybe the Salem witch trials. Their primary campaigns have turned into a relentless pursuit of heretics: Holdingâs ties with liberal trial lawyers, Cobleâs support of liberal economic incentives, Romneyâs liberal record in Massachusetts, Santorumâs support of liberal earmarks, Gingrichâs closeness with liberals like Nancy Pelosi.
They should do away with primaries. Instead, start holding all the candidates under water. If they die, they were liberals.
