Bev Wins Round 1

Strong speech. Smart strategy.
And Governor Perdue won her televised faceoff with Senator Berger.
Today, Republicans should be asking: Did we misunderestimate her?
She is criticized for not saying how she’ll pay for it all. But that’s good sequencing: The headline today is her cutting business taxes – as the N&O said, “stealing some of the political thunder from the new Republican legislature.”
And she made Democrats happy by vowing to protect teachers from layoffs.
The other shoes will drop when she releases the budget. I suppose she’ll propose extending the sales tax increase and paying for her community college initiative with video gambling money. (I wish you wouldn’t go there, Governor. That issue is already getting smelly.)
Her speech was well-written and her delivery strong. She talked tough and looked optimistic. Berger, by contrast, looked grim and talked partisan.
He should fire whoever staged the event in what sounded like an echo chamber.
Perdue looked stronger last night than she has since taking office. As I’ve said before, a governor can always look good compared to the legislature.
