For years, MAGA Republicans have fetishized AR-15s, the weapon Trump’s assailant used. They wear AR-15 lapel pins and pose brandishing the high-powered assault rifles.
Now, in an Olympic-worthy feat of mental gymnastics, Trump’s acolytes claim that the AR-15 attack makes Trump and Project 2025 off-limits to campaign criticism.
Get real.
After Paul Pelosi was brutally beaten by a hammer-wielding attacker, Trump joked at the California Republican state convention, “We’ll stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi … how’s her husband doing, anybody know? And she’s against building a wall at our border, even though she has a wall around her house — which obviously didn’t do a very good job.”
Donald Trump Jr. posted an image on social media of a hammer and a pair of underwear: “Got my Paul Pelosi Halloween costume ready” (photo).
After 14 men were arrested and charged with plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Trump Sr. shrugged it off: “Maybe it was a problem, maybe it wasn’t.”
Now Trumpers feign horror because Democrats point out that Trump is a liar, a convicted felon and a sexual abuser who would be a “dictator on Day One.”
A meek Washington media primly calls on “both sides” to lower the temperature.
There’s no “both sides” here.
Only one side has promised violence and promoted authoritarianism for years.
Only one side, incited by Trump, staged a violent attack on the Capitol.
Only one side, the Democrats, support common-sense laws to keep AR15s out of the hands of disturbed young men.
Only one side opposes Project 2025.
Only one candidate for President, Joe Biden, went on national television to say Americans should resolve their differences with ballots, not bullets.
The other one played golf.
Only one candidate called the widow of the man killed at Trump’s rally. She wouldn’t speak with Biden because her husband didn’t like him. She said, “I support Trump, that’s who I’m voting for, but I don’t have ill-will towards Biden. He didn’t do anything to my husband. A 20-year-old despicable kid did.”
She added that she hadn’t heard from Trump.
So, no, we’re not going to stop pointing out why Biden is better for America than Trump.
