There are hucksters in just about every business. But science is sort of a, modern sacred cow. Scientists are generally accorded to respect once reserved for Popes and Bishops when it comes to the purity of their motives.

So it comes as a shock that one of the corner-stone scientific ‘proofs’ of Global Warming turns out to be a hoax. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to go on a political diatribe Global Warning doesn’t exist. But this miscue does raise a question about the infallibility of science.

The two biggest images (in large part thanks to Al Gore) proving Global Warming is upon us and the seas are rising are the ice-caps melting in Greenland and the statistic that nine of the ten warmest years since the Stone Age happened in the last decade.

Only, it turns out, the later claim – by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies – is wrong. To it’s credit NASA promptly admitted its error when a Canadian analyst found a glitch in it’s climate change model – but how could a multi-million dollar agency with the best and brightest scientific minds make a mistake this fundamental – and end up embarrassed by a Canadian lone ranger.

Anyway, it turns out three, not nine, of the warmest years on record were in the last decade. And it also turns out that the 1930’s, before anyone ever heard of Global Warming, had more ‘warm years’ (four of ten) than the last decade. Plus the single warmest year on record is 1934.

That, of course, doesn’t prove Global Warming is a hoax. But it is a pretty big setback for the ‘Global Warmers’ credibility and it’s pretty strong evidence someone (in pursuit of publicity or a grant?) got carried away and cooked the numbers to scare the willies out of millions of people.
