A Tiff (Between Democrats)
It was odd.
In Wake County, during their primary, a coalition of liberal activists led by Dean Debnam launched a campaign to defeat four incumbent Democratic County Commissioners (who I’d always thought of as pretty liberal themselves).
You wouldn’t usually expect to find a liberal Democrat doing favors for a developer but that’s exactly what the activists accused the four Democratic County Commissioners of doing: They said the Commissioners had voted to spend $4 million to buy a bankrupt golf course – with the unfortunate name of ‘Crooked Creek Golf Course’ – to bail out developers. The incumbents, they said, were guilty of pay to play.
The four incumbents countered that they’d bought the golf course to create a new park, not to bail-out developers, but on election day two of them lost. The hard feelings erupted at the first County Commissioners meeting after the election when Erv Portman lambasted his attackers for dirty politics, hitting below the belt, and attacking his integrity.
Commissioner Jessica Holmes – who was on the other side from Portman – then reprimanded him for ‘acting like a wounded child’ and, still fuming, Portman hurled a final insult at his tormentors: He said they were ‘Trump-like.’
It was an odd thing to hear one liberal Democrat call another liberal Democrat.
