A Scary Time
Republicans usually are better than Democrats at closing out elections, because they’re better at scaring voters.
This year, what Republicans will do if they win should scare voters.
As they do every election, Trump and MAGA are stoking fears about non-existent crime waves and fictitious immigrant invasions.
And now there’s “tax-paid sex-change operations for prison inmates and immigrant detainees.”
That’s a new one on me, so I found this fact check from the Annenberg Public Policy Center. Bottom line: It’s another lie to feed the insatiable MAGA outrage monster.
The truth is Americans should be scared of what Trump will do: terminate the Constitution, prosecute his critics, deport millions of people, destroy the Western alliance against Russia, take away Social Security and Medicare, cut taxes for people who are “rich as hell” and impose tariffs that will wreck the economy, destroy jobs and raise the cost of everything.
In North Carolina, Democrats should tell voters what will happen if Mark Robinson, Hal Weatherman and Dan Bishop win and Republicans keep their supermajority in the legislature.
They’ll pass a total ban on abortion. They’ll criminalize women’s health care. Attorney General Bishop will prosecute women and their doctors.
They’ll defund public schools. They’ll take hundreds of millions of dollars more from public schools and give taxpayer-paid vouchers to rich parents who send their children to private schools.
They’ll ban books in schools, not assault rifles.
They’ll cut taxes for billionaires and big corporations, instead of helping families, small businesses and young people who want to buy their first home.
They’ll keep denying that climate change is real. Storms and floods will keep getting worse.
Residents of Western North Carolina especially should be scared. Trump and Robinson already are sabotaging storm relief and recovery efforts. If they win, Helene’s victims will be lucky to get a few rolls of paper towels thrown at them.
Democrats have run good campaigns in North Carolina this year. They’ve recruited good candidates. They’ve raised lots of money. They’re running good ads. They have a strong ground game.
It’s time to close strong. It’s time to tell voters the truth.
Forget an October Surprise. It’s time for an October Scare.
