A Line in the Sand

The Iraq battle lines are drawn in the presidential race.

Republicans made clear in their debate this weekend that they want to keep troops in Iraq. Democrats are just as clear that they want troops out.

So the American people will get to make a clear decision on the war next year.

That should be a slam dunk for Democrats. But it could be tougher than it looks.

Americans are reluctant to cast a vote that can be cast as surrender. They voted for Ike in 1952 because he promised to go to Korea, not get out. And they voted for Nixon in 1972 because he had a secret plan for peace, not a plan to withdraw immediately.

Has the public changed that much in 36 years – almost two generations? Or can the Republicans repeat history and make Democrats look like surrender monkeys?
